Learn How to Set and Achieve Goals
Now after watching the above video we may hit a more fundamental question. How do we even determine what we should have as goals? Tim Ferriss provides a great evercise in the X post below providing a great process and exercise to determine what your goals might be.
Goal setting exercise from Tim Ferriss (Get Unrealistic):
Summary of Tim Ferriss's Goal-Setting Method:
The Process:
- Create two timelines: 6 months and 12 months
- List up to 5 things in each category:
- Having (material wants: house, car, clothing, etc.)
- Being (be a great cook, be fluent in Chinese, etc.)
- Doing (visiting Thailand, tracing roots, racing ostriches, etc.)
Key Guidelines:
- Don't limit yourself - ignore how these will be accomplished for now
- Be honest - if you want a Ferrari, don't put "solve world hunger" out of guilt
- Focus on what improves your self-worth
If you're stuck, consider:
- What would you do daily with $100 million in the bank?
- What would make you most excited to wake up each morning?
Convert "Being" to "Doing":
- Great cook → make Christmas dinner without help
- Fluent in Chinese → have a 5-minute conversation with a Chinese co-worker
Take Action:
- Define 3 steps for each 6-month dream
- Complete the first step NOW (within 5 minutes)
- Set tomorrow's action (complete before 11 AM)
- Contact someone who's done it instead of endless research
The best first step:
Find someone who's achieved what you want and ask for advice.
